Individual Showcase: Letter of Application Practice 2

Dear Sir or Madam,

I would like to join your Performance School, and I hope to get a place or your dance course. I love to dance and I want to pursue dance in my career as a dance teacher. I feel that your course is the best for me to achieve my goals and develop my skills in the best possible way. I hope to set up my own dance school after university as dance has been in my life ever since I was a child and I want that to continue as I grow up. I feel that Future Finds School of Performance and Production can help me achieve those goals by improving my dancing and pushing my boundaries both technically and creatively.

I have been dancing for about 10 years and my strongest dance style is classical ballet. I am home-educated, diligent and have a good work ethic in my studies. I am able to apply my work ethic to many things including your course and the work involved. I have done a few performances before and I have a high level of professionalism when I’m on the stage. I have recently done a performance with my ballet school and my teacher and others who came to watch said it was a great success. I believe that your course will further that professionalism in my dancing and when I’m on stage to help with my university course later in life and also when I hope to teach.  When I was younger a did a ballet dance in a gala. We had to dance on grass and I learnt to adapt my dancing to different environments other than just a stage or dance studio. I’m very focused and although my strongest style is ballet I would like to explore other styles that you can teach and develop skills in.

Over the last year I took Level 2 Dance at Calderdale College and took part in many performances and workshops amongst my technique classes. The performances greatly helped my professionalism as often we could be seen by the audience when we weren’t dancing. I was given experience dancing in a park and using my surroundings as both stimuli and props in my dancing. I feel that this experience will help me in being able to adapt my dancing as it was something that we had never done before and it’s not something you’d often see in a studio. Despite the experience and confidence gained by this experience, it is something that I can definitely improve under the good instruction of your course tutors.

I had also taken part in a workshop lead by one of the dancers of the James Wilton Company. The style was very different to my own and it was fast paced, pushing me to pick up choreography that was unusual to me faster than I could normally do easily. I feel this will help me do the same in the future, if I need to learn something that I struggle with quickly, as I will know how to pick up the choreography better from past experience.

I wish to expand and strengthen my dance skills, both creative and technical and I feel that your dance course will help me improve my dancing. I haven’t have much experience working in groups however I believe your course will give me experience with that as I will be working with the other dancers on the course. Despite that I will do my very best to learn fast and work well with the other dancers. Although I’m often not very versatile with my choreography, I think that your course will give me inspiration and challenge my choreographic skills.

Looking at the theme “Portent” as I was choreographing my solo I decided on the meaning “a sign or warning that a momentous or calamitous event is likely to happen” instead of “an exceptional or wonderful person or thing” as I thought it would be something that would be more interesting to play around with. My solo is based on the idea of foreshadowing and little bits of the practice of palmistry, better known as palm reading. I have two main motifs that I develop in my dance. The first is based on the idea of pain and how that could be hinted at in young life and the second on happiness. Throughout the dance, I choreographed in a lot of watching my hands to symbolise the palm reading. One of the pathways was set to resemble the life line and the head line. The movements along those pathways change often and represent the mood swings of a teenager  to show growth. To build to a climax I choreographed a fast, jumping, happy section quickly transitioning into a much slower and sadder section. My dance ends with a balance into a quick lunge. This brings my dance to a close because it has the idea of a quick death as I lunge to the floor. My music is mostly fast paced and intense, however it has parts where it is slower and more gentle. I chose this music because I felt that the way it changed complimented the way the dance changed and the ideas of life within the dance.

Dancing is most definitely something that I want to do with my life and I believe your course will help me achieve my dreams.
Sincerely Laura Broughton-Janes
